Light emitting diodes (LED) are small light emitting devices that pass through a semiconductor electronic component. When the two terminals ‒ anode and cathode ‒ of LED are connected to a voltage source, the electrons move at the p and n junction and it releases energy in the form of photons; this effect is called electroluminescence. The gap of energy in the semiconductor determines the colour of the light produced.

Traditional lighting systems use heat that creates an effect called incandescence. This system produces about 90 per cent more heat than light, which means some of the electrical energy is lost. The wasted electrical energy and the heat and carbon dioxide emissions add to the warming of the atmosphere.

The LED lights use electroluminescence which means that it does not have all the negative effects of the traditional lighting systems.
